Helping With Administering Medication

When it comes to taking medications, it’s important for your loved one to take them as prescribed – meaning taking the right dose, the right way, at the right time, for as long as necessary. Medications can include prescription medicines, over-the counter medicines, vitamins, dietary supplements, and alternative medicines.

It’s important to keep a current, complete list of all medications your loved one is taking, including the dosage (for example 550 mg) and how often it’s taken (such as four times a day). Some of the symptoms of HE – like anxiety, confusion and forgetfulness – make it difficult for your loved one to remember to take their medication, so displaying a detailed list can be helpful.

In addition, it’s important for your loved one to talk with their healthcare provider before starting any new medications or supplements, as some substances are harmful to the liver and should not be taken by someone with liver disease, either alone or in combination with other drugs.
